President van Rwanda Paul Kagame: Ik heb deze week twee gesprekken gehad met president Ramaphosa over de situatie in Oost-Congo, waaronder eerder vandaag. Wat er over deze gesprekken in de media is gezegd door Zuid-Afrikaanse functionarissen en president Ramaphosa zelf, bevat veel verdraaiing, opzettelijke aanvallen en zelfs leugens. Als woorden zo veel kunnen veranderen van een gesprek naar een publieke verklaring, zegt dat veel over hoe deze zeer belangrijke kwesties worden beheerd. Een paar belangrijke verduidelijkingen voor het verslag: 1. De Rwanda Defence Force is een leger, geen militie. 2. SAMIDRC is geen vredesmacht en hoort niet thuis in deze situatie. Het werd geautoriseerd door SADC als een oorlogszuchtige macht die deelneemt aan offensieve gevechtsoperaties om de DRC-regering te helpen vechten tegen haar eigen bevolking, samenwerkend met genocidale gewapende groepen zoals FDLR die Rwanda als doelwit hebben, terwijl ze ook dreigen de oorlog naar Rwanda zelf te verplaatsen.
President van de Republiek Zuid-Afrika Cyril Ramaphosa: Na de recente intensivering van de gevechten in het oosten van de Democratische Republiek Congo, heeft Zuid-Afrika 13 dappere soldaten verloren die toegewijd waren aan hun missie en zich inzetten voor vrede. De gevechten zijn het resultaat van een escalatie door de rebellengroep M23 en de Rwanda Defence Force (RDF) militie die de strijd aangaat met de strijdkrachten van de DRC (FARDC) en vredeshandhavers van de SADC-missie in de Democratische Republiek Congo (SAMIDRC) aanvalt.
